Tne name comes from a Scandinavian word “tit” meaning “little” and the Old English word “mase”, meaning bird. These birds are notorious for pulling hair from sleeping dogs, cats and squirrels to line their nests. Right now they’re foraging on the ground for insects and seeds.

These colorful birds migrate south in the winter, eating berries and sugary fruit. They especially like the small cones of the Eastern Redcedar (a kind of Juniper).
