A friend gave us these dried Cockscomb flowers to use the seeds for planting this annual. It’s also known as Rooster Comb, Brain Celosia, or in its native East Africa the Swahili name is mfungu. I hope to have some nice flower shots later this year.

Flowers of the Hoya plant…

It’s always great when the tropical Hoya plant comes into bloom. The tiny wax-like flowers have a wonderful fragrance.

Mr. Don Hutton pointed me to this bloom behind the golf course clubhouse. The bulb must have been planted many years ago by someone who once owned a house there. This lily variety originated in China and is only propagated here by bulbs. The flowers pop up suddenly in late September or early October. The bulbs are deadly poisonous if ingested, and these flowers are widely associated with death in Japan and China (often used in funerals).

Also known as Purple passionflower, True passionflower, Wild apricot, and Wild passion vine.  The Cherokee in Tennessee called it Ocoee, It’s the Tennessee state flower. This one’s kind of scraggly.
