Last night, just after sunset, there was a nice celestial grouping. The crescent moon with bright Venus below left, and Jupiter just above left of the steeple. I wish I had planned ahead for this shot…I might have gotten a much better exposure.

Tonight the moon crossed paths with Venus in the twilight sky. I had hoped they would appear closer together but this is what we got. I’m not at all satisfied with this photo but hey, it was cold out!

By the time the moon sets on the west coast tonight, it will be completely in earth’s shadow for the last lunar eclipse of 2011. Unfortunately, it will be very low on the horizon by that time for us here in the heartland.

Someone told me this is known as a “Horse Thief” moon. It WAS pretty bright out last night. Next full moon is the “Hunter’s Moon”. It’s hard to get detail in a full moon shot as there are no shadows in the craters except at the moon’s edge.

Lunar Eclipse on the Winter Solstice…

Was hampered by light cloud cover as well as ground fog and mist, but this is what we got. By the way, ancient people first got an inkling that the earth was round by observing that its shadow cast on the moon was curved.
